Congratulations on joining — we're delighted to have you on board! This page covers everything you need to know to get started and get the most out of your membership at OSC.
Club Access
Once your membership is confirmed, you'll receive a physical key and door codes from our Membership Secretary. These give you access to the clubhouse, changing rooms, and boat storage area. Please keep your key safe — a replacement deposit may be charged if it's lost. Access is for members only; please do not share your codes with non-members.
Boat Hire
Members can hire club boats to get out on the water. Our fleet includes a range of dinghies suitable for different skill levels. To hire a boat you must hold at least RYA Level 2 (or equivalent) and complete a short sign-off with an instructor. Booking is available via the online booking system. Boats must be rigged, sailed, de-rigged and returned to their storage position in good condition. Any damage must be reported immediately.
Racing
We run racing every Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon throughout the sailing season (typically April to October). All members are welcome to take part — if you can sail a triangle course, you qualify! There's always an experienced race officer and friendly sailors who can help you understand the starting procedure. Results are posted in the Racing Results section of this site.
Volunteering
OSC is run entirely by volunteers, and we rely on members to help keep the club running. As a member you'll be asked to volunteer for safety boat duty, race officer duties, and work parties during the season. Volunteering rotas are shared at the start of the season. It's also a fantastic way to meet other sailors and develop your skills on the water.
How the Committee Operates
OSC is governed by an elected Management Committee who meet regularly throughout the year. The committee is responsible for the club's finances, facilities, safety, and events calendar. All members can raise topics via the Club Management page. AGM elections are held in the autumn — all members are encouraged to participate or stand for a committee role.
Bringing Guests
Members are welcome to bring guests to the club. Guests must be accompanied by a member at all times and must sign in on arrival. Guests may not use club boats without completing the standard sign-off process. Regular guests are encouraged to take out their own membership.
Club Boat Damage
All damage to club boats or equipment must be reported to the Bosun or a committee member as soon as possible, even if it seems minor. Do not attempt repairs yourself unless authorised. Unreported damage that is later discovered may result in the hirer being held responsible for repair costs.
Water Safety & Buoyancy Aid Rules
Safety is our top priority. A buoyancy aid or personal flotation device (PFD) must be worn at all times when on the water. Children under 18 must always wear a buoyancy aid on the jetty and water. Sailing instructors and safety boat crews are required to wear appropriate PFDs at all times. No exceptions. If you're unsure whether your equipment is suitable, ask an instructor before going afloat.
